More on Jones

While I'm on the subject of Gerard Jones--he had an interesting column in the op-ed section of Sunday's Philadephia Inquirer, apparently reprinted from the Los Angeles Times.

Here's an excerpt:

"When I was a teenager, superheroes were obviously about being queer," David says. "Clark Kent shedding that hideous blue suit and shooting into the sky in his tight? What else? But overshadowing that joy that fear that people would learn the truth--until that moment in Spider-Man 2."

What moment? Read and find out.

This piece by Jones was really rather oddball. Why did he feel the need to bring up the opinion of some friend who thought that Superman was "obviously" about being queer? If Jones believed that, why didn't he say so?

I mean, the way it was expressed here, it was a pretty lame, unjustified opinion, and the fact that it was pro-gay doesn't give it any more validity than a similar anti-gay opinion would've been (as seen in Wertham's SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT, where the supposed "homosexual wishdreams" embodied by Batman & Robin provided a convenient bugbear with which Wertham could threaten worried parents.)

My verdict: Jones just phoning one in to make a little extra dough and further hype his book (which does sound like a corker, I must say).
